Mr. James Colbert., Jr. was named late last year to leadership of the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE), the position which Dr. John Sawyer held until mid-2014. He has committed to keeping HCDE involved with All Kids Alliance and has assumed a seat on our Council of Executives.
Harris County is the most populous county in Texas and encompasses 25 school districts. Superintendent Colbert brings to this job a reputation for being a fearless advocate for students and someone dedicated to transforming their academic performance.
Prior to joining HCDE, Mr. Colbert served as Superintendent of West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District near Beaumont. Before that post, he was Assistant Superintendent at Hamilton County Department of Education in Tennessee where he had oversight of 72 campuses with more than 42,000 students.
A native of Washington, D.C., Colbert was the recipient of a track and field scholarship that brought him to the University of Texas at Austin. There he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
He earned his Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas State University. Mr. Colbert also holds certification in the areas of the Superintendency, Administration, and Special Education in Texas and Tennessee.
He and wife Angie are the parents of a 14 year-old son Isom. They have made Kingwood, Texas their home.
